AVID Mission
AVID is designed to increase school wide learning and performance. The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students, and most especially the least served students in the "middle", are capable of completing a college path by:

  • succeeding in a rigorous curriculum
  • completing a figorous college preparatory path
  • entering mainstream activities of the school
  • increasing their enrollment in four-year colleges, and
  • becoming educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society

AVID Student Profile
The AVID student is a student with academic potential. AVID students have:

  • Average-to-high test scores
  • 2.0-3.5 GPA
  • College potential with support
  • Desire and determination

AVID Criteria
The AVID student often meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • Will be the first in their family to attend college
  • Historically within a least-served group in four-year colleges (e.g., underrepresented as a racial or ethnic group)
  • Low income
  • Special circumstances

AVID at MMS
AVID began officially at MMS in the fall of 2005. This year (2007-08) Martin has AVID elective classes at every grade level. AVID elective classes are taught by Ms. El Shafie, Ms. Millsaps, and Ms. Kirkland
