Martin Gifted and Talented Magnet Middle School

Academically Gifted Services

Wake County Philosophy:

The purpose of the Academically Gifted (AG) Program is to provide an appropriately challenging educational program for students who perform, or show potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience or environment. The AG program is not intended to be enrichment benefiting all students, nor is it intended to address all of the multiple intelligences. Only students whose needs cannot be met through instruction in the regular grade level program are eligible for gifted service. Straight A's alone do not determine a need for gifted services. Please see the brochure on AG services for more detailed information. Please see these links for eligibility of services and identification:

Services at Martin GT Magnet Middle School:

As stated in the Wake County Public School System Magnet philosophy, there are no performance measures, auditions, or tests that must be passed before students are accepted into the GT program magnet, and thus, in to Martin GT Magnet Middle School. Over half of the population of Martin consists of students who were identified as Academically Gifted through testing in their elementary schools, and are entering the school being previously identified. Additionally, students may be nominated for testing in the Fall and Spring-please see the following link for more information on the chain of inquiry for Gifted Services:

Students who meet the criteria for specified service options will receive a Differentiated Education Plan. The student's level of need will determine the amount of service differentiation and the setting in which it will be provided. The needs of each student are assessed on an individual basis and appropriate service options are recommended based on needs. At Martin, services are received through the regular classroom, with additional support provided through our AG resource teacher, and other additional AG certified personnel. If a student is identified AG in language arts, instruction is differentiated based on the student's performance and demonstrated mastery in the specific content area. Assignments are tiered according to need. Advanced level math course pathways are usually established by the elementary school fifth grade teacher, and students are placed in advanced math level classes according to those recommendations. On occasion, this recommendation may be re-evaluated.

All core classes at Martin are heterogeneously grouped, allowing all students to benefit from best teaching practices. Teachers have the ability to allow flexibility in their groupings within the classroom, carefully observing for success and need for challenge. All students have the opportunity to participate in the highest level of differentiated instruction and tiered assignments that allow them challenge and opportunities for success.
